Just say No! To Federal Mandates say Libertarians.
Missoula MT - - Former first lady Nancy Reagan said just say no, libertarians are saying just say no
to federal mandates. Governor Judy Martz now says she will accept new federal regulations on DUI national
standards. Martz can't afford to say no says Montana Libertarian Party Chair Mike Fellows because she
has already spent the Federal funds in the 2001 budget. Governor Martz may call it blackmail, but the
truth maybe she can't afford to turn down federal funds.
Libertarians have heard this song and dance before says Fellows. The requirement of Social Security
numbers on hunting and fishing licenses is another instance of Governor Martz kneeling to the federal
government. "Martz said she would back the repeal of the provision of Social Security numbers on
hunting and fishing licenses only if the Federal Government would give Montana a waiver that would
allow Montana to still receive federal funding without complying with the requirement" said Fellows.
Now is the time to start rethinking who our next governor will be in 2004. We had a good libertarian
candidate for governor in 2000, Stan Jones, who knows what the 10th Amendment is all about.
The issue here is not about new DUI standards, because laws won't stop citizens from driving, when
they may have had too much to drink. The lower standards will simply make more criminals for
justice system costing taxpayers. Education is the answer says Fellows, not new laws.
Libertarians want a smaller limited government, one that current Republican Governor Martz can't
supply. The Martz Administration took the federal money and is now paying the price, a price that
will be paid by all Montana Citizens.
